CommVault Base Client (Instance001) by CommVault Systems is the foundational endpoint component of the Commvault data protection platform. Installed on servers and workstations, it provides the core services needed to perform and manage backup, restore, replication, and archiving tasks. The Base Client handles secure communication with CommServe and MediaAgent components, coordinates job scheduling, and supports content discovery and indexing for data protected by other Commvault agents (such as file systems, databases, virtual machines, and cloud workloads).
It supports policy-driven features like encryption, compression, bandwidth throttling, and deduplication when enabled. “Instance001” identifies this specific installation of the client; environments that host multiple, isolated Commvault deployments may use additional instances (for example, Instance002).
The client runs as background services with minimal user interaction, is centrally configured and updated from the Commvault console, and writes detailed logs for diagnostics. It is typically required on endpoints that participate in Commvault-managed data protection workflows and serves as a prerequisite for most Commvault agent modules.
